WHY ‘OKAY’ ISN’T GOOD ENOUGH OR "THE REALITY IS THAT AVERAGE IS BELOW AVERAGE."

One of the aspects of playing college hockey that young players ignore is the importance of having more than just “okay” grades.

Getting to play hockey in college is about making yourself marketable to the 60+ college D1 teams out there.

Lots of good player are out there, looking for a spot. You’re competing with those players. Are you really preparing to earn a roster spot in college?

Colleges can only take kids who can “get in”. That’s obvious, but let’s take a deeper look at the process, and how your academic results affect your “marketability” to a school.

Yes, it’s true - many schools can take average students, but the truth is - the more “average" your grades are, the better a player you need to be. In fact, most schools have a quota on how many “weak” students they can have on their roster at a given time. Consequently - if you have average grades - your lack of commitment to excellence in the classroom is going to lower the number of roster spots available to you in ways that you might not consider. Academic risk roster spots are a finite number, set internally by the athletic department of each school, and those spots are not going to be given to an “average” player - they are going to be held for the best players, because if a school is going to take a chance on a student - it’s going to take a risk on a player who can contribute a lot on the ice.

“Average” grades reduce the number of schools that can even consider recruiting you! The obvious benefit of academic excellence that the better your grades - the more schools that are able to recruit you - think of Ivy League schools here - if you don’t have great grades - you can forget even to bother looking to play at those 6 schools - they are off the list. Your pool of available spots has shrunk by 120+ roster spots.

The net result for YOU the player is - the more serious you are in the classroom - the more schools you can be recruited by, and the greater number of roster spots available to you overall at EVERY school.

Your efforts in the classroom is something YOU can control easily in your development. You CAN do well in school. How? You can sit in the 1st 2 rows of the classroom. You can get your work done on time, every time. You can go to your teacher’s office hours for help, and to demonstrate your serious commitment to academics. You can ask for help, extra credit, whatever it takes - because in the end - you will be the winner. The schedule for playing hockey and achieving in the classroom IS demanding, it IS challenging, but you can make it easier on yourself.
